Legislated

Allowing citizens to vote on bills while they are still being debated through technology

Legislated started in ChiHackNight with the purpose to engage citizens in submitting “witness slips”, a formerly physical only process that gave them a voice in legislative debates about bills headed up by committees. These slips are read into record upon the decision of the committee to bring the bills to the floor, connecting representatives to the opinions of their consitutients.

In 2017 we began the project and released mid-year to political groups.

Our major success came when citizens were able to vote against bills 1000% more than ever before; thousands of slips poured in and overturned a bill for gun shop owner loosening of restrictions within the city of Chicago, a place already rife with gun violence
